Description: This overview of common chronic pain conditions and their management uses clinical case scenarios as a starting point, making it a clinically interactive book. It discusses not only evidence-based management, but also clinical features and laboratory findings in these chronic pain conditions.
Purpose: It is intended to educate primary care physicians on the care of patients with chronic pain conditions. Since chronic pain is primarily a medical issue, it behooves primary care physicians to be knowledgeable about them. This book goes a long way toward accomplishing this goal.
Audience: Family physicians and primary care physicians are the intended audience, but nurse practitioners and others involved in patient care in an outpatient setting also will find the book helpful. The authors, experienced pain physicians, have done a good job of providing evidence-based information.
Features: The first two parts review the pharmacology of pain medications and nonpharmacological analgesic interventions. A separate chapter discusses managing opioid-related misuse in pain patients. The last part of the book covers a number of chronic pain conditions in 13 separate chapters, which start with a case representing a condition use a consistent format, detailing the epidemiology of the condition as well as its clinical features. Pertinent physical exam findings are discussed as well as any lab findings that help to confirm the diagnosis or rule out other conditions. Management of the condition is discussed in a stepwise fashion, based on the evidence. A concise book, it is brief but to the point, providing information in something of an outline format without in-depth discussion. Medications that are useful are mentioned, but not their titration. However, this is not the primary focus of the book and does not take anything away from it. Chapters are well referenced.
Assessment: For far too long, chronic pain conditions have been poorly diagnosed and even more poorly managed, contributing to the misery of millions of people.
