This is an introduction to the study of medical language. According to the author, it can be used to learn medical terminology in a classroom, via independent study, or through a distance learning program. The purpose is to promote the understanding of medical language. Through word analysis and labeling exercises, the student learns the anatomic and clinical terms pertaining to each body system. The audience includes allied health students, nursing students, and others interested in learning medical terminology. It could also be used by individuals who wish to refresh their medical terminology knowledge. Each chapter opens with a chapter outline and student objectives. Chapters 1 to 8 present the basics of medical terminology. These chapters include word parts, a general orientation to body structure, chapters on disease, diagnosis and treatment, and a chapter on drugs. In the second part, chapters begin with an overview of the normal structure and function of the system under study followed by a list of key terms with definitions. Word parts related to each topic are presented and illustrated with exercises. There is an overview of clinical information pertaining to the system, followed by a list of key terms with definitions. Case studies illustrate terminology in the context of a medical report. Audiotapes aid in pronunciation. An instructor's manual is available with color transparencies and a test bank in both computerized and paper format. The book is well organized and presented. Many study aids promote active participation by the student. Attractive and informative illustrations and photographs are included in every chapter. The exercises, crossword puzzles, study questions, andflashcards encourage the student to understand and retain the language of medicine.
