About the Author

Winfrid Kay Thackrey was born to a pioneer family in 1899 and raised on a remote ranch near Bismark, ND. Trained as an interior decorator at the Art Institute of Chicago, she went to Hollywood in 1921 hoping to work as a set designer. Finding that field closed to women, she became a script supervisor and special projects assistant which put her at the heart of the Hollywood filmmaking process, working with many of its most creative people during its most creative era.

Thackery, who wanted to be a set designer but settled on becoming a script clerk for New York and Hollywood movie producers, has written a memoir of her years in the movie trade from 1921 through WWII. The sexism of the industry is patent, but the focus of the book is Thackery's lively stories of the people she knew and places she traveled as she lived and ate and relaxed with the actors, actresses, and crew during the grueling months of shooting.
