“Men Under Fire” in the third book in the Grayce Walters Suspense Series. This book covers the story of Grayce Walters assistant Hollie Thomas. Raised in an abusive home, Hollie escaped to the streets as a teen. She has lots of baggage. But her life is transformed when Grayce offers her a job in her veterinarian clinic. But when Sergeant Nick Welby brings his bomb sniffing dog Talley in for treatment, there are immediate sparks flying between him and Hollie. Can Hollie let her guard down to let Nick in? I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of raw emotion. Both main characters are suffering and need each other. A definite must read.
Men Under Fire is my first read by author Jacki Delecki. I found this book to be well written. I love the characters! Suspense, action and humor erupt from Ms Delecki's book and will hold your attention from beginning to end. Men Under Fire is a fairly short read, perfect for those with limited time for reading. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Jacki Delecki in the future. Men Under Fire is book 3 in the Grayce Walters Series, but can be read as a stand alone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for review purposes.
Men Under Fire by Jacki Delecki is the third book in her Grayce Walters series. I hadn't read the previous two books but I had no problems reading this one and connecting with the characters. Hollie Thomas is a really strong, independent and street smart young woman. Her past is filled with meth addicted parents, anger and sadness. She now works for Dr. Grayce Walters as her receptionist and feels like she has found a new life and a new family. Sergeant Nick Welby and his golden lab, Talley, are now home from the war. He and Talley are both suffering from PTSD and struggling to become "normal". His vet has recommended that Nick take Tally to see Dr. Walters to help her to relax. Although he finds it very unusal, he agrees because he will do anything for Talley. There he meets Hollie and is totally captured by her. A smooth plot, complex characters, a deranged member of an environmental activist group, bombs, kidnapping and a little romance made for an excellent read. All of the secondary characters were well developed and added some humor to the story. Jacki allowed Hollie and Nick's relationship to grow slowly as Hollie has trust issues. I appreciated that she took the time to develop the relationship because it allowed me to get to know and understand Hollie much better. It also showcased Nick's integrity and patience to do what was best for Hollie. I will definitely be looking for the first two books in the series now as I want to know more about Dr. Walters and her adventures. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Nick is a battle weary soldier, on a sick leave, trying to recuperate from the last mission overseas, along with his partner Talley, the golden lab. Nick is an All-American good guy, comes from a loving family with a farm, played football in high school, went to college, and he has an easy way to charm the ladies. Hollie is a goth girl, who spent lots of her childhood on the streets, trying to hide from her meth parents. She has had it rough, and because of that has grown a tough exterior, to protect the tender heart she has inside. Nick's insta-attraction to Hollie is jaw-dropping. And when Nick hears Hollie boss is trying to find two missing marines, he gladly volunteers to help, to be able to be around Hollie. There was something in the beginning of the story, that didn't flow well, like it was edited with a heavy hand, and because of that, missing some sentences with vital information about the story. I had to go back several times to check what was happening, thankfully that smoothed out after a while. The story is short, and because of that, everything happens fast, in a short period of a time. Hollie is rather prickly, and the first conflict between Nick and Hollie comes from him smiling to other woman, that Hollie reacts strongly to and walks away, making Nick beg for a second chance. This was on their second time meeting each other, not on a date. The over the top emotional reactions happens often with Hollie, she is so insecure because of her past. But Nick is completely enthralled with her, and willing to do what it takes to convince her about his feelings towards her. But as investigators, Nick and Hollie seem to form a good team, as they are going through the internet, finding clues to find the missing marines. The action and suspense are more on the background of the story. And when dangerous situations arrive, they are played down and solved quickly. The romance has a Young Adult genre vibe to it, with Hollie's insecurities and angst towards relationships. The story did have some unique touches to it in the plot, and the big family of a heart, that has developed around Hollie was touching. ~ Three Spoons
Adventure awaits This is the first book I have read in the series and was delighted that I was able to get a feel for all of the characters right away!
