Description: This book summarizes key information about 60 individual surgical procedures, each in its own chapter. Each procedure lists a concise series of steps that are then summarized in a "reader checklist." Two introductory chapters give the case for preoperative mental rehearsal, and several chapters at the end cover more general topics such as surgical knots.
Purpose: The book is intended to provide "a comprehensive systematic approach to performing surgical procedures." The hope is that trainees will use the book and its carefully selected "nodal points" and bulleted lists to mentally rehearse a procedure before they go into the operating room. This is a worthy objective, and the book meets its goal for the procedures selected.
Audience: The book is written for trainees, primarily residents and fellows. It might be of use to practitioners who wish to review the steps of an infrequently performed operation. The book meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors are all credible authorities, mostly associated with a single highly regarded institution.
Features: After an introductory section on mental visualization, the book is organized into 10 parts that cover specific areas of surgery, such as bariatric, breast, and vascular surgery. These sections are organized alphabetically; thus, part II is bariatric, part III is breast, part IV is cardiothoracic. This organizational structure is relatively unique, but may not matter much in an era when most textbooks are accessed electronically. Coverage of procedures in the parts is spotty. Only three procedures are included under breast: modified radical mastectomy, lumpectomy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy. There is virtually nothing about skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, nothing about excision of benign masses, ductal excision, and so on. The bariatric surgery section consists of just two procedures: laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (there appears to be an editing error in the title of the gastric bypass chapter in that "revised" has been tacked on; this is potentially confusing). The colorectal section is much more complete, in contrast, and there is a large part entitled "General and Minimally Invasive Surgery," which is a kind of catch-all. It is always difficult to know which procedures to include and which to exclude, but I wish the authors had included more hernia procedures, some trauma procedures, and adrenalectomy.
Assessment: This book is probably best accessed through the electronic copy (which can be purchased as a separate book) rather than the print version. It would then be searchable and the potentially confusing juxtaposition of parts would not be noticed. The "reader checklists" that accompany each procedure are extremely valuable and the best part of the book.
