Short, adventurous, and just right for those readers ready to hit their first chapter books! Mickey Malloy is just a normal boy, which means he has normal chores like taking out the trash. Yuck! When a visit to the stinky garbage can ends with the mailman delivering a package with his name on it, Mickey can't wait to see what's inside. But the content isn't only mysterious, it leaves him with a sore finger and 24-hours of craziness. At just under seventy pages, this is a wonderful, short adventure. Mickey is an average kid in every way as is his best friend Juanita. The reactions, dialogue and surroundings are as normal as they are for any kid living in a residential area in the US. Mickey is a little slow to figure out what's happening to him. . .the brains in this duo is definitely Juanita. . .but it makes him humorous and tons of fun to follow. The humor leans a little toward the slap-stick side without falling into complete ridiculousness. The scenes are vivid and draw in enough to make readers laugh, gasp and even snort a time or two. This isn't a book with a heavy message, but simply allows kids to enjoy diving into an exciting tale—something even reluctant readers are sure to appreciate. The plot is fairly simple but just right for the length. It's the great start to a series, one that promises tons of excitement, fun, silliness and amazement to come. I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.
