Mid Life

Mid Life is subtitled 'Poetry 1980-2000', and is a revised and reconsidered Collected Poems covering the period 1980-1994 in terms of composition, and several further years of revision. The contents of this volume, in earlier versions, originally appeared as A Whole Bauble from Carcanet Press in 1995. Now revised, this volume sums up the author's "midlife" in compositional terms - the early period having been discarded, and the later appearing from Arc Publications as a series of books under the overall title Music. A retrospective volume in the year that the author turned 60, this book demonstrates the continuing fascination that works such as the long sequence 'Continual Song' can exert upon the reader. The opening period of the author's writing career - at least, that part of it with which he is now comfortable - is now again available for readers rightly fascinated by his more recent work.

About the Author

Michael Haslam says "I was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1947, and educated at Bolton School and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. In my final year (1968) I took my tutorials with Mr Prynne, in Caius. I began publishing my poetry around 1971, after Peter Riley, then in Denmark, duplicated and distributed a number of copies of a bunch of my poems to a clutch of editors of wee magazines. In 1970 I came to live at Foster Clough, near Hebden Bridge, where I still live. By the late 1970s merely living here had become my sole poetic subject. Now I call my whole project (after its first expression) 'ContinualeSong'."Michael Haslam's work is collected in Mid Life, covering his work up to the mid-1990s (but incorporating later revisions), and in three volumes from Arc Publications, under the collective title Music, which is his current project.
