The first time I read Mila 18 I was about 20 years old and I was totally engrossed with the story and never forgot it. Almost 40 years later, after losing my job, I returned to school and took a class on the Holocaust. For my end of semester project, I did a paper on the Warsaw Ghetto and used Mila 18 as one of the references. (I made an A!)This is a heart-wrenching story that is one of the best written books I have ever read. It encompasses the human spirit and the determination of the Jewish people to survive and carry on their legacy. No one who reads this book will ever be able to forget it!!

This book was just as good a read as it was when I first read it over 30 years ago. It is a book for the anyone with an interest in learning about the Holocaust. Leon Uris takes you inside Poland's Warsaw ghetto during World War II. From the day the brick walls went up in October 1940, through the deportations to Treblinka and Auschwitz, and finally the Ghetto uprising in May 1943, you are feeling all the depredations visited upon the Jews and all the violence. Finally you are escaping with a small number of Jews through the sewers of Warsaw. A very well researched and written book! I have read several books by Leon Uris and he has never let me down.

I am a long-time fan of Leon Uris.  He is certainly one of the most superb writers of our time.  This is a fictional account of the Warsaw Ghetto and Uprising which ensued.  These may be fictional characters, but I am sure they have real counterparts in history.  Uris creates characters which are very believable and his account of the events in Poland and Germany during this time are very accurate if you do the research.  The reader is taken into Jewish homes, gaining an insight into their way of life and religion.    Soon events lead up to the Germans attacking Poland and though they courageously defend themselves, it is all in vain.  Things soon spiral out of control and the Jews gradually lose everything they own and are forced into a ghetto.  The rest is history and Uris does a fantastic job  of relating the events.   I I think what sets Uris' books apart from other authors are his characterizations and realistic portrayal of these people.  His Polish Jews are very determined to win, having so much pride in their country.  He shows the good and bad in their characterization.  His descriptions of life in the ghetto with starving children and beggars in the street crying for food will haunt you long after you have read the last page.  Only a writer of his caliber could tell this story, with the reader so captivated, he cannot put the book down.  I too have read this book more than once and enjoyed it thoroughly.     I too would highly recommend this book and also try other books by Leon Uris, such as Trinity or QBVIII.  They are equally spectacular books.

I love WWII books and read a lot of Wouk- Ambrose etc. picked this up and literally read it without stopping. There is only one other book that compares, it is a self published book by Stephen Paper "Voices from the forest" that comes close. It is bold and doesn't hold back any punches, it will absolutely get to you...wonderful

This book is a beautifully written masterpiece. Being recommended to me by a teacher i did not take it seriously at first. That was until I read it myself. Things begin to happen from the start. The plot is superb and The ending is a surprise.

Read this book and Exodus when I was in my early 20's. Plan to read both again. They are far beyond excellent and all who live in the times we are now in should read them. We should never forget.
