Overview

A teen programmer at a school for geniuses must join forces with a boy she can't remember to stop a hacker from deleting their memories in Shana Silver's action-packed YA debut, Mind Games.

Arden sells memories. Whether it's becoming homecoming queen or studying for that all important test, Arden can hack into a classmate's memories and upload the experience for you just as if you'd lived it yourself. Business is great, right up until the day Arden whites out, losing fifteen minutes of her life and all her memories of the boy across the school yard. The boy her friends assure her she's had a crush on for years.

Arden realizes that her own memories have been hacked, but they haven't just been stolen and shared... they've been removed. And she's not the only one: her mysterious crush, Sebastian, has lost ALL of his memories. But how can they find someone who has the power to make them forget everything they've learned?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"It's a YA Michael Crichton novel, minus the 100-page master class intro on quantum mechanics, biotech, and string theory.... Mind Games is an absolute blast. If you are a fan of Memento or Strange Days, this one's definitely for you!" —NPR

"An edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep readers guessing. The complex plot, the occasional twists, and the quick pacing make this a difficult read to put down." — School Library Journal

"A fun read for those wanting a twisty sf mystery with a steamy high-stakes romance woven in." —Booklist

"This book is impressive not just because it’s a fantastically written debut, but it’s refreshingly different from pretty much anything I can remember reading. ... It’s intense, high-stakes action from beginning to end—and it’s incredibly intelligent." —Bookwyrm Bites

“An absolute roller coaster ride.... It makes me wonder if such a thing could be possible. I loved it. I absolutely loved it!” —Pamela Delupio, Swoon Reader

“An awesome concept and a gripping mystery… a wild ride from beginning to end.” —T. K. Yeager, Swoon Reader

Gr 10 Up—Arden is special. Not only is she incredibly smart and attending a high profile, super-exclusive school, but she's figured out how to hack into HiveMind to copy memories from one person and give them to another. It's become quite a lucrative side business for her. Forget to study for a test? Buy some studying memories from Arden. Didn't do the homework? No worries, she can borrow memories from the school's number one student to provide all the answers. But when a boy shows up at school whom she's never seen before but who is supposedly her best friend, Arden realizes her own memories have been tampered with—and some have been outright erased. The hunt is on to figure out who removed her memories and what this means for HiveMind as a whole. Silver's debut novel is a edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep readers guessing. The complex plot, the occasional twists, and the quick pacing make this a difficult read to put down. VERDICT While this is a work of suspense first and foremost, romance readers will not be disappointed by the budding love between Arden and the boy with no memories. A recommended purchase for a high school or public library.—Amanda Toth, Lane Libraries, Hamilton, OH
