One cannot help but wonder if the Cliff Notes treatment of 'Moby-Dick' has outlived its usefulness. Those interested in understanding Herman Melville's great novel might do better by looking at some of the more recent scholarly treatments of the novel. Take the 'Moby-Dick' chapter of Kevin J. Hayes's 'Melville's Folk Roots,' for example. Though a scholarly book, Hayes's work is easy to read. He deliberately avoids the cumbersome and annoying jargon that hinders so many other literary studies. Instead, Hayes offers a fresh, original reading of 'Moby-Dick' that provides a brief, yet insightful view of 'Moby-Dick.' Check out 'Melville's Folk Roots' and leave the Cliff Notes by the wayside.
