Quite a few people are saving selvedges these days, recognising that these narrow printed strips offer interesting design possibilities. After all, you do pay for selvedges when you buy your fabric! If you don't already have a selvedge stash, you will want to beg, buy or borrow from others so that you can make the amazing patterns in this book. The author provides guidance about how to collect and cut and gives quite a few methods for sewing them. She offers some design suggestions for creating your own quilts, and then presents instructions for the projects big and small. As well as cushions and quilts, you'll find directions for making a pincushion, a Christmas ornament, and a table runner.

I started saving my selvages just a few months ago after I noticed more and more projects being made by other people using their selvages. If you aren't sure what the selvage is, it's the edge of your quilting fabric. There are two selvages on each fabric, one of which has the fabric information (designer, colours used, fabric # and manufacturer) printed along it. These strips can be quite colourful and have one edge which is finished, so lots of quilters have started using these strips to make all sorts of projects. Since I had a little stash accumulated, when I was offered the opportunity to review a copy of "Modern Selvage Quilting" by Riel Nason, I jumped at it!! This book has lots of projects to try and has very clear, easy to follow instructions!! Since I didn't have a lot of selvages collected, I decided to make the "Selvage Latticework Accent Pillow" on page 51. It was a fast and easy project that turned out just great!! Now that I've read the book, I'm going to trim my selvages a little wider than I have been and I'm going to make sure that I save them ALL. I think this would be a fun class to teach at my local quilt shop too, so I'm going to ask them to order in the book!! If you are looking for something fun and a little different, why don't you try quilting with selvages??

Riel wrote this book to share all her tips about making selvage quilts, plus numerous instructions for many different creations. There is such satisfaction to make something from nothing—normally selvages are wasted! I have been lured into this vortex, the fabric companies are on to us and now they are making selvages more interesting. I must confess I bought fabric for the selvage alone! I suspect we will see a lot more selvage quilts at upcoming shows!

There are 17 practical projects to get you started from small pincushions, Xmas ornaments, table set, pillows, valance and eight striking quilts in different sizes. The projects are superb, the instructions easy to follow and the photos and diagrams are top quality. This is a very interesting book that could be used as a project book – I would be happy to make any of the projects. It could also be used as a starter point for ideas and inspiration. I am also thinking that the ideas in this book could be used for strip quilts. Fabulous.
