Rebecca Kirby, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC, was formerly an Associate Professor and Director of Emergency Services at the University of Pennsylvania, and was the owner of the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA for 21 years.

Andrew Linklater, DVM, DACVECC, was trained at the Animal Emergency Center and is currently a Clinical Instructor at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

Description: This is a guide to the complete and effective treatment of critically ill small animals based on Kirby's Rule of 20, a well-known concept in critical care
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easy to read book, not only for small animal emergency/critical care clinicians, but also for general practitioners. This is a worthy objective since there is not a thorough book on this subject.
Audience: It is written at a level which students, interns, residents, and practitioners will understand. It is not appropriate for boarded specialists, although it is often helpful to have quick reference books available.
Features: This book goes into depth on each of the aspects of Kirby's Rule of 20, all components of effective care for the critically ill, including fluid balance, blood pressure, electrolytes, coagulation, and the different body systems. The algorithms, tables of information, and diagrams are helpful supplements to the text for more visual learners. Although the tables are an excellent resource, they sometimes are hard to read because of text placed too close together. The text in the tables also is small, making them difficult to read at times.
Assessment: Although this is one of many books available for practitioners in emergency and critical care, it has a unique method of presenting essential concepts for the complete care of the critical care patient. It is not meant to be a reference to all the most recent journal literature, but it does include recent research which is helpful for clinicians who want to stay current. This will be helpful to clinicians who want a quick reference on the shelf, but don't necessarily want to invest a lot of time and effort to understand the pathophysiology of diseases.
