How are you supposed to get ready for bed when there are a growing number of monkeys who just won't stop messing around?

Suddenly I heard an EEK, a TAP TAP on the pane.
A tiny little monkey face was peering through the rain.
I'm sure my mom won't mind, I thought. He's really very small.
One tiny pygmy marmoset could do no harm at all. . .

When a little boy lets a monkey in through his window, he doesn't expect it to bring all its friends!

About the Author

Alex English grew up in Hampshire with her head in the clouds and her nose in a book. After a maths degree and a few years wrangling spreadsheets, she decided to revisit her first love – children's books. She hasn't looked back since. Alex graduated with distinction from the Bath Spa University MA in Writing for Young People in 2018. Her picture books have been short-listed for the Dundee Picture Book Award, chosen by BookTrust as part of their Bookstart Corner programme and selected by The Reading Agency for the Summer Reading Challenge. She lives just outside Paris with her husband, two sons and a gardenful of chirruping toads.

Pauline Gregory is a Devon based illustrator, living by the sea. She specialises in children’s literature. Following her passion, Pauline graduated from Plymouth College of Art with a First Class Honours, BA in illustration. She takes inspiration from the funny and endearing things animals and people do everyday as well as the superb imagination that children have. Pauline works with traditional materials to create quirky illustrations with humor and charm.

What’s the harm in letting one tiny monkey into the house?

A young tot getting ready for bed sees a pygmy marmoset outside in the rain. He lets the creature inside, and they have fun jumping on the bed and playing with toys. But then, the little critter scampers downstairs and lets more primates in. Soon there are howlers, capuchins, baboons, and more, all over the house. The boy’s mother is upstairs tending to the baby and isn’t sure what’s going on. But the youngster has it covered, with a string of confident replies: “ ‘I’m coming, Mom,’ I shouted back. / ‘Just tidying my toys!’ ” Mayhem that rivals that of a certain cat (in a certain hat) ensues. The text bounces along in rhyming couplets, matching the rhythm of the monkeys’ swings. Gregory’s cartoonish art is full of motion and mischief, with jelly handprints on the walls and scuttling little rascals flipping and climbing everywhere. The frenetic pace crashes to a halt when the monkeys realize how upset the little boy is getting. Contrite, they quickly clean everything up and march in a line out the front door. The little boy is light-skinned, while his mom is slightly darker-skinned. (This book was reviewed digitally.)
