When I was in Junior High, I discovered books by Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney (among others) and fell in love with the Gothic genre. Fast forward many years and I am glad that I found Ms. Allie Harrison's books. Quint and Meg Falkner inherit a huge old mansion from a distant cousin. Quint is thrilled and decides to turn it into a B&B by renovating it back into its former splendor. Meg is not so sure but supports his efforts. When strange things start to happen, Meg thinks she might be going crazy. The original owner, Joshua Montgomery, was hanged for his wife's murder. But, did Joshua really murder her? Is the Manor haunted by ghosts? And, why is Quint suddenly acting so different? The story was engaging, spooky, well written and entertaining. There was a tad too much passion for my taste, but nothing too graphic. The author did a good job at building the tension throughout the book and there was enough creepiness to keep me reading long after I should have been in bed! If you are looking for a horror story, this isn't for you. But, if you love haunted houses, ghosts, and gothic romance, jump right in. You won't be disappointed.
Montgomery Manor, the second book in Harrison’s The Haunted series, is a gothic romance involving an old house, restless spirits and the repetition of history. Meg and Quint have just inherited an old bed and breakfast that was the site of a grisly murder many years before, a place some claim is haunted to this day. Meg doesn’t believe it until her husband starts acting strangely and she begins having erotic visions that may well be transporting her into the past, making her fear she’s losing her mind. If that wasn’t enough, she has a stalker who is becoming increasingly aggressive, and who provides a very real threat even if everything else is all in her head. I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, it was a heart-pounding page-turner that kept me reading well past my bedtime. Harrison’s ability to seamlessly merge the supernatural and mundane and the past and the present evoke shades of M.J. Rose, and kept me on the edge of my seat. On the other, the opening was slow and then the ending brought in elements that weren’t hinted at earlier in the book (or if they were, I missed them), so they seemed to come out of the blue. I was also disappointed that the bad guy was exactly who I suspected from the beginning. Still, Montgomery Manor is well worth a read.
Intensely Intriguing & Ethereally Erotic.... Allie Harrison does it again! The second book in the Haunted series, Montgomery Manor is ethereally erotic; telling of a love that transcends time and, yes, even death itself. Despite the minor incongruities in the minutiae, this book delivers a sensuous intrigue will keep readers glued to their seats from beginning to end!
