Description: This book, which builds on the sixth edition from 2018, covers an array of principles important to the practice of anesthesiology. It provides an overview of the different pharmacological classes regularly used by anesthesiologists, followed by anesthetic considerations by organ system, and multiple sections focusing on subspecialty anesthetic management. Each chapter begins with key concepts that ease readers into the full narrative. At the conclusion of each chapter, case discussions provide an opportunity to advance learning by applying basic concepts to some new but related topic that may not have been discussed previously.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a foundation of knowledge for anyone starting the practice of anesthesiology. The book is not meant to be a complete reference as other sources are needed to obtain a true depth of knowledge. As a single source, it provides a great breadth of knowledge, which makes for a fantastic resource for a first exposure to the specialty.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for trainees, anesthesiology residents, and nurse anesthetists. It is appropriate for the previously mentioned groups; however, it seems more appropriate for junior-level residents than senior trainees. Since the patient populations are so vast and anesthetics are provided to patients within every specialty, this book serves as a good refresher to subspecialty anesthesia, especially if some time has passed between exposures. The book is likely able to meet these needs since the authors consist of department chairs, professors, and experts from credible institutions within the academic community who regularly work alongside the target audience.
Features: As a review book that covers a wide range of topics, it is organized thoughtfully. The book starts with the most basic topics readers would need to grasp and then proceeds to more advanced subjects. For new trainees, the book is organized in such a way that each chapter can be read sequentially from the front cover to the back cover. Within each chapter, the various learning aids are reasonable additions. The illustrations consist of pictures, schematics, flow diagrams, and graphs, which are often quite basic but still effective. To be more comprehensive, many chapters include lists of information without a narrative. Although these charts add volume to the book, they are easy to skip over. The case discussions at the end of each chapter add significant value and increase engagement as readers are challenged to apply the information just presented.
Assessment: This book is a tremendous resource, which is sure to provide a strong foundation for any trainee starting anesthesiology or preparing for the ABA Basic Exam. It gives a more thorough tour of anesthesiology than Miller's Basics of Anesthesia, 8th Edition, Pardo (Elsevier, 2022), yet is not as complete as Miller's Anesthesia, 9th Edition, Gropper (Elsevier, 2020); however, it is nestled in between and provides great value to its readers. Since the goal of the book is to serve as an introduction to anesthesiology, this new edition may not offer much more to trainees than the prior sixth edition since little has changed in the foundations of anesthesiology concepts over this short four-year span. Overall, however, this book is a strong stand-alone resource for trainees starting their journey into anesthesiology.
