About the Author

Mary Beth Flynn Makic has more than 30 years of critical care experience in research, evidence-based practice, and clinical education. She is a Professor at the University of Colorado College of Nursing and Program Director for the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist graduate program. She is also a Research Scientist at a Level I trauma center in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Makic achieved her BSN from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. She completed her Masters of Science at the University of Maryland at Baltimore with a focus on trauma patient populations and the advanced practice role of a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Her PhD was conferred in 2007 by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado. She is active locally and nationally in several professional organizations. She recently served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. She also serves on the editorial board of several critical care journals, has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and is a successor co-author of two Elsevier books on nursing diagnosis. Dr. Makic is well known for her passion for improving patient outcomes and nursing practice through evidence-based practice.

Description: This compact, pocket-sized reference book assists in the development of nursing diagnoses for the purpose of creating nursing care plans. This is the 2020 sixth edition; the previous fifth edition was published in 2017. It includes a list of NANDA-I approved nursing diagnoses on the inner front and back covers.
Purpose: The purpose is to be used to help formulate nursing diagnoses for nursing care plans. The authors created this book to assist nursing students and nurses in developing appropriate nursing care plans for clients in the clinical setting. This compact book is packed with information on the various NANDA-I approved nursing diagnoses.
Audience: This book was designed and intended for nursing students but can also be used by nurses working in clinical settings. The authors are credible with many years as nurse educators. Starting this guide as a student handout, they have now had their care plan books in publication for over six years.
Features: This book is divided into two sections. The first section is a guide to choosing a nursing diagnosis based on a medical diagnosis or presentation. This makes the book very user friendly and readers can quickly locate exactly what they need. Looking up anything from a kidney transplant to Marfan syndrome will produce a list of appropriate nursing diagnoses quickly. The second section is a guide to developing a care plan using the nursing diagnoses suggested. Each diagnosis will include a definition, risk factors, associated conditions, client outcomes and a well-developed list of interventions. This guide also includes a special appendix for hearing and vision loss, a large bibliography, and an index.
Assessment: As NANDA-I updates approved nursing diagnoses, this current guide is extremely useful for nursing students not only in the clinical setting but for simulation and online assignments. It is perfect for nursing students to carry and use while in clinical. This is the perfect guide for referencing when needing to complete any nursing care plan assignments.
