Overview

Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 7 for three pianos in F major, K. 242, was originally written for a family group, a mother and two daughters. Here, the clan outdoes even the original performance by adding a related conductor, Kent Nagano, who is the husband of pianist Mari Kodama and the father of Karin Kei Nagano. Interestingly, the latter gets the more challenging Piano I part here, not the simple third piano. This isn't top-flight Mozart, but the family makes a strong case for it, with well-coordinated performances that bring out the personalities of the individual players. The soloist group contracts to Mari and Momo Kodama for the Piano Concerto No. 10 for two pianos in E flat major, K. 365; the sisters deliver smooth, if not especially exciting performances, in which the balance between pianists and orchestra seems a bit uncertain. The strongest outing here comes in the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra in D minor of Poulenc, where the sisters let down their hair to capture the style shifts in the work, and Nagano and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande are on very familiar ground. Victoria Hall in Geneva is a reasonable venue for an album that is light, upbeat, and generally enjoyable. ~ James Manheim
