Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheaths that surround nerve cells, producing a variety of neurological symptoms such as limb weakness and sensory loss. In most cases, the disease progressively worsens over time, leading to severe impairments in mobility and cognition. Various medications may slow this progression, but the disease is currently incurable and unpreventable.

Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine captures our current understanding of the inflammatory processes that lead to demyelination and neurodegeneration in MS, as well as the treatment options that are available. Contributors discuss the genetic and environmental triggers that may contribute to the initiation of MS and the roles of factors such as B cells, T cells, microglia, astrocytes, and the microbiome in the autoimmune response and disease progression. Description: This general overview of multiple sclerosis covers in detail its pathophysiology through treatment. It gives information on both the molecular and clinical level, which makes the book useful for both basic scientists and physicians.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a summary of multiple sclerosis. It brings together in one book a discussion of its etiology, pathology, clinical course, and treatment.
Audience: The targeted audience is scientists studying multiple sclerosis and clinicians seeking references on this disease. The relevant audience is likely neurologists, but it also could be good for those in training. The authors are from prestigious institutions and are knowledgeable in this field.
Features: This book provides a detailed overview of multiple sclerosis, particularly of treatment. The chapters on treatment are a great summary of the drugs' mechanism of action as well as efficacy/safety profiles. The book is easy to read and understand, and doesn't use too many acronyms. The organization is logical, beginning with etiology and ending with treatment. However, the book could use more graphics, especially in the imaging section. It would also be nice to include a chart of all the available treatments, the reasons to pick specific ones, and efficacy so that providers could reference one chart rather than turning to specific chapters.
Assessment: Overall, this is a great reference for providers and scientists looking into multiple sclerosis. It gives the necessary details and is easy to understand.
