A brother-and-sister team enter the world of a beloved children's story in this illustrated chapter book by child author-illustrator Bhattacharjee.

Nine-year-old Ara and her 5-year-old brother Felice have recently moved from Toronto to Arizona with their parents. Ara is slow to adjust to the move, and only finds solace in books. One night, she and Felice venture into the basement of their new home, where they find a vibrating mirror. Before they know it, they’ve been drawn by the mirror portal into a strange land where pigs are sentient and mention “the Big Bad Wolf” in hushed tones. It doesn’t take long for Ara to realize that they’ve been transported into the world of her favorite children’s story, “The Three Little Pigs.” Unsure how to make it back home, the siblings begin to explore their surroundings until they come across the three titular characters on their way to build their houses—made of straw, sticks, and bricks, respectively. Ara makes it her mission to keep the pigs out of danger. When she approaches the first one, Tom, she learns that not all is what it seems in Pown (aka “Pig Town”). Soon, the classic story is turned on its ear, and Ara and Felice must uncover the identity of the true antagonist, bring him to justice, and return home before their parents wake up. Overall, Bhattacharjee presents a sophisticated take on a classic tale that is refreshing in its approach, if somewhat rough from a stylistic point of view. Ara is a smart and enthusiastic protagonist whose actions feel like a celebration of studious children. The plot twist, though logical, is still unexpected, and the ending effortlessly establishes a larger narrative for potential sequels. The author’s black-and-white line drawings are accomplished but not necessary.

A delightful and entertaining spin on a classic fairytale, written for young readers by another young reader.
