Natural Knitting Project: Bronx Community Exhibit
The Natural Knitting Project is a collaborative Bronx arts exhibit focusing on the process of everyday products being created in an eco-friendly way. The project consisted of 14 workshops where Bronx residents got the chance to grow dye plants, knit a product from natural fibers, and explore our communities mass consumption of landfill products. All efforts resulted in a community art exhibit opened to the public after the project's completion in fall 2016. All Bronx residents were welcomed to participate and the exhibit debuted at Field Day 2016, The Laundromat Project's annual festival celebrating neighborhood arts and culture in Bedford-Stuyvensant, Harlem, and Hunts Point/Longwood.

About the Author

Clothing designer Sajata Epps aka SAJATA-E is a community leader and 39 year born and raised Bronx resident who created this project to address some major concerns in her community. She has been running her lifestyle brand out of the Bronx for 16 years and noticed some alarming issues as a Bronxite resident. One in particular is the large amount of trash created by community members as they purchase cheap and disposable fashion that lasts only a season. For the price of one dollar a Bronx resident can purchase a winter hat for themselves and their children but these purchases don't last very long and are usually made from synthetic fibers that won't break down in landfills. Sajata wanted to teach residents other inexpensive options in order to provide their families with a more sustainable living standard and improve their quality of life.
