*This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review* Nica Mitchell is going to college to become a writer, but her plans are put on hold when she has to go back home to take care of her father Stephen, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Her mother died in an accident a year ago, and she doesn’t have any brothers or sisters, so she is doing everything she can to help make him comfortable, and take care of him. He tells her a story about how he was having an operation and had died for a few minutes and then brought back to life by the doctors. However he felt that he was still alive during that time and was somehow still aware of things. He felt that he was in the “between stages” of life and death. He explains that if anything happens, he doesn’t want to be cremated, he wants to be put in a special mausoleum and not buried underground. He gives Nica a special military two way radio and explains how it has a location tracker and has lights on the side of it to help signal the other person, so they can find them if the other person is lost. He wants to have the radio with him if or when something happens and the doctors proclaim him as being dead, when he may actually be in be in the “in between stage” again and could wake up later. That way he can use to radio to signal Nica and let her know he’s actually still alive. Nica is skeptical about the whole thing but humors him anyway and agrees. There are many different turns the story takes and you think things are going one way when it’s actually going somewhere completely different. It’s also a world where not everyone is who they say they are and you can’t trust anyone. I loved the bond that Nica and Stephen had. They were really fleshed out and had little quirks that added so much to their characters. I loved this story up until the ending. It started out so heartbreaking, then there is a great plot twist that happens (that I loved), but where it ended up going was a little disappointing. If it had the ending I thought it was going to have, I would have enjoyed and loved this more, but it did a complete 180 and ended on such a different tone. It went from loving and heartbreaking to confusing and disappointing. I did enjoy it though and it is very short so I do think it’s worth checking out. ***Review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official. A literary masterpiece! I couldn’t put this book down and read it cover to cover in one sitting. Too many plot twists and turns to recap but all artfully encompassed in a beautiful heartwarming tale that leaves you on the edge of your seat to the very end! 5 stars isn’t enough!
