Description: This is the sixth edition of what is described in the forewords as a practical, data-enriched guide for the evaluation and management of adolescents and young adults. The first edition was published in 1984 and this edition has been updated with new sections and additional information about young adults, adding a new dimension to its utility for general care providers. This edition also includes an access code for an accompanying website.
Purpose: The book is designed to be a practical, yet detailed resource for caretakers of adolescents and young adults. The editors and many expert contributors have accomplished these goals and objectives in exemplary fashion. As a pediatric hospitalist and PICU practitioner who has cared for adolescents and young adults for about 35 years, I agree with Dr. DeAngelis, author of one of the forewords and the Editor in Chief Emerita of JAMA, that this book is easy to access and review for clinically relevant information.
Audience: It is intended for general pediatric providers. In addition to pediatricians, family physicians, and medical pediatrics specialists, this includes medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses. Also included in the intended audience are social workers, nutritionists, and pharmacists. The editors and contributors represent an excellent cross-section of adolescent and young adult caretakers, and they have done an excellent job of presenting the most up-to-date information.
Features: This is a comprehensive resource on the clinical, psychosocial, and psychiatric issues that practitioners encounter in the care of adolescents and, in this edition, young adults. Frequently, when these patients have been stabilized after being admitted to the hospital for acute illnesses and we have time to talk with them and their families, there are other social and psychological issues which must be addressed as part of providing excellent overall care. The references are current and extensive, as I am learning that younger learners like to also review original references. The print and online versions, which appear to be essentially the same, are both easy to use.
Assessment: This is an excellent, well-organized, and practical resource for all caretakers of adolescents and young adults. The editors and contributors have done an excellent job of updating and adding new data and clinical information, as well as new sections including the assessment and management of young adults. I highly recommend this sixth edition.
