Purpose: With these side-by-side comparisons, the atlas provides a clinical perspective of neuroanatomy.
Audience: Medical students are the greatest beneficiaries. Studying the head and neck can be challenging, particularly when it comes to orienting oneself when examining radiographic images. With this book, students can connect the ideal anatomy seen in an atlas with images to gain a better perspective.
Features: This book is simple in its mission — it combines the expansive work of Netter with radiographs in order to create a helpful visual aid. In addition to the images, notes orient readers to the region they are viewing and, with the corresponding radiograph, where to begin comparison with the respective plate. The book is divided into three major areas: the brain, the head and neck, and the spine. Each section is supplied with views (where applicable) in the axial, coronal, and sagittal plane. There is also a helpful illustration at the top of each page indicating what level of the head readers are viewing. Like most atlases, this one is thorough in its labeling and contains surgical, clinical, and pathological considerations when appropriate.
Assessment: This atlas takes a focused approach to the study of one of the most difficult regions of the body. By combining illustrations with real-world images, readers get the unique perspective of comparing and contrasting idealized plates with actual radiographs. Medical students and professors alike will make ample use of this atlas when reviewing the anatomy of the head and neck. The only drawback may be the need to have another anatomy book in addition to a comprehensive atlas. However, this is an excellent supplementary atlas.
