Description: As the title states, the famous drawings by Dr. Frank Netter and his successor, Dr. Carlos Machado, are the foundation for this excellent and well-illustrated guide for students of surgery.
Purpose: This is a high-yield resource on both regional anatomy and contemporary surgical procedures. As Dr. Netter noted, the anatomy does not change, but our understanding of it and its clinical significance does. This book provides a comprehensive description of the most common and important contemporary operations and offers detailed depictions of relevant anatomy.
Audience: Written by established surgeons, this atlas, without a doubt, will be a very valuable tool for residents in surgical specialties as well as medical and other professional students.
Features: Divided into 10 sections, the book covers gastrointestinal, thoracic, vascular, breast, endocrine, urologic, and gynecologic operations, and essential emergent procedures. Individual chapters provide thorough and concise text descriptions of indications, anatomic landmarks and variants, details of exposure, pitfalls, and technical aspects of the operation. Superb drawings from The Netter Collection of Medical illustrations and Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy are supplemented with intraoperative photographs. Over a dozen chapters have online video components.
Assessment: This is an excellent atlas for trainees to review the anatomy, understand key concepts, and prepare for operations. The illustrations and the high quality of didactic content place this atlas above most, if not all, its competitors and will assure it the longevity of other Netter titles.
