Description: This superb book for non-neurologists should not be confused with a few other books with similar titles on the market. There have been many advances in neurology since the previous edition was published in 2004 to justify this update.
Purpose: As the title suggests, the purpose is to define what clinicians who are not specifically trained in neurologic disorders should know for their daily practice of medicine. The book outlines this material extraordinarily well. The authors and contributors are nationally recognized and experienced neurologists.
Audience: This is a one-of-a-kind book for all who have the opportunity to care for patients with neurological complaints or complications of concomitant disorders. It is equally valuable for medical students, residents, and experienced attending physicians.
Features: The book begins with the neurologic examination, something that non-neurologists commonly find befuddling, but the authors present it in an easy to understand manner with excellent explanations. Chapters use a template highlighting key points and special clinical points, defining the diagnosis, outlining the pathophysiology and treatment options, and, most helpfully, when to refer to a neurologist. The only shortcomings are the black-and-white, rather than color, photographs and the inability to show the motions characteristic of some neurologic disorders.
Assessment: This should be one of the foundations of every clinician's library and is well worth the cost.
