Overview

Description: This is a paperback handbook of common neurologic problems in small animal practice.
Purpose: This book is designed as a quick reference and guide to clinical problems in small animal neurology.
Audience: It is designed for small animal veterinarians in clinical practice. It is also suitable for veterinary students in the clinical phases of their training.
Features: The book employs a problem-oriented approach to small animal neurology, presenting material in 16 sections which correspond to major clinical signs. Each section is organized into subsections covering pertinent definitions, lesion localization, differential diagnoses, and diagnostic evaluation (pertinent history, physical and neurologic exam findings, appropriate diagnostic tests) for each major sign. The sections then proceed with more detailed coverage of specific disease conditions which may give rise to such signs, their diagnosis and treatment. Generous use of well-constructed charts and algorithms enhance the book's usefulness as a quick reference and clarify the recommended clinical approach to particular neurologic problems. However, the use of multiple symbols to highlight or "code" text entries is overdone, rendering it ineffective. The illustrations are superlative, far surpassing what is usually presented in books of this type, and include many color and black-and-white plates and color diagrams of exceptional quality and relevance. A short list of general recommended readings is provided at the end of the book; the text is otherwise unreferenced. The wire binding makes the book cumbersome to shelve and likely less durable.
Assessment: In a genre for which many choices are available and user preference for a particular format prevails, the caliber of the illustrations and diagrams in this book and its problem-oriented format give it a decided edge as a practical guide to clinical neurology.
