Ally Carter is one of my favorite authors, and Not If I Save You First is a classic Ally Carter book! If you've read her other books, you'll surely enjoy this one as well. With a strong female protagonist who's incredibly knowledgeable about obscure things, the son of a president, and a bejeweled hatchet, what more could you want? This book is cute and charming and thrilling all at once. You'll find yourself on the edge of your seat, anxious at what's about to happen next with Maddie and Logan. Pick this one up if you want a fun read!

Pulled into caring about these two childhood friends from the start. Enjoyed and respected Maddie’s knowledge, survival skills, and coolness under fire. Great to read about a strong, determined, skilled female character. Glad the author shared the friends’ internal thoughts and feelings and that she wrote them as capable despite fear and danger.

I almost missed out on this one because someone said it was another book in the Embassy Suites series and I immediately went into panic because of course I hadn't read the last one. I'm so glad I went ahead and gave it a shot just to see. Because now, I have a new favorite Ally Carter book! Maddie's dad quit his big important job working for the President. He moves the two of them to the Alaska where no one else is around for miles. Six years go by, and Maddie's old best friend, the one she now hates, comes to visit. And Maddie is just about to give him a piece of her mind, when all hell breaks lose. I realized with this book that I am definitely a character driven reader. Maddie was LEGIT and I found myself hanging on to every word of this book just to see what she would do next. ESPECIALLY the ending. Logan was also a great character to me. At first he was getting on my nerves because he was so spoiled and acting out, but he warmed up to me. Even the "villains" in this were well thought out and I really liked reading this story because of all of them. I also really liked the setting. I haven't read many books set in Alaska, so this was a bit of surprose. I really liked the way Carter gave us a visual of Alaska. The snow, the ice, the biting cold, and the will to survive in all the characters. It was a real treat to see all the things that they had to go through and how they survived it all. And of course, there was the plot. It was a bit confusing because it went back and forth from the past to the present with Maddie's letters, but it became a lot easier to follow once things started moving in the present. I love thrillers, and the fact that this one was a thriller, paired with a survival aspect, I have to say, it was right up my alley. This was nothing like I expected, but in a good way. The ending was so unexpected and the characters were bad ass. This book has something for everyone and definitely one I can see that will appeal to everyone, no matter what genres they enjoy!

THIS is why I fell in love with Ally Carter’s books so many years ago. She is able to spin the most incredible, heart-racing novels and have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I honestly loved the characters so much; my favorite thing was how smart and funny Maddie (and the whole novel) was. Also I was SCREAMING at the Blackthorne Institute reference. A perfect book for long time Ally Caret fans and new ones alike.

The Gallagher Girls will always hold a special place in my heart, and I expected this book to bring the same level of light-heartedness, fun, and funnies. Instead, I got some confusion, some super unbelievable things (lol, even more unbelievable than a spy school for fifteen year olds), and Alaska - a LOT of Alaska. To continue on the Alaska comment, I feel like this book could have been about Alaska and that's it. Like, it was constantly talking about the state. Anything going wrong? Let's blame it on Alaska. We need to talk about anything? Let's talk about Alaska. I will say that Carter did a fantastic job of research and creating a wonderful setting of Alaska, but dear goshhhhhhhhh, there was so much Alaska. I have to say that I really really did enjoy the first...maybe third or fourth of the book? I loved seeing young Maddie and Logan, and I really did think their chemistry was adorable and fun. I liked their excitement and I loved the whole setup for the rest of the book for it. I also loved the tension that they had, and I love a little good miscommunication/tense build-up with the relationship between the two. I was readyyyyyyyyyyyy for the rest of the book. However, once Logan got captured, I was kind of done in. Things seemed to stall, and Maddie was supposed to have this big plan but I really got confused because it felt like we were just wandering around for no real reason? And then everything just felt too cliche, and I started skimming because I just wanted to get to the end and I didn't even care about anything. And the ending thing reallllllllllly had me frustrated and bored and I don't even know what was going on besides I didn't want to be reading this story anymore because I was boreddddddddddddd. Also, the romance. Okay, I was all in for it at the beginning when the tension started, but I felt like there was absolutely no lead up to the rest of the romance. They hated each other, got kidnapped, and then they were in love. Like, they haven't seen each other in six years, no communication between the two, most of their communication was snappy, and then all of a sudden they're focusing on how cute they are while kissing and proclamations of love. So I lost the ship because there was nothing actually leading up to the non-enemies change over??? Overall, I thought this just an okay read, but I wanted a lot more from it. It started off fun and like it would have a great shippable ship, but it ended up floundering in ALASKA and boring plots. There really wasn't much about the bedazzled hatchets and female empowerment and campy fun I was promised, but it wasn't a terrible, terrible read. I just felt disappointed and a lack of good fun. Also, Alaska. Two crowns and a Cinderella rating!

This was such a fun read! I binge read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down! Stayed up until 4 am reading it. There's girl power, a sweet boy, unexpected redemption, and a ton of badassery! AKA this is exactly what I look for in an Ally Carter read!

It was a good book but I think it was least favorite Ally Carter book. I think it would be better as a series.

This is a fun, fast read that will definitely appeal to Carter's existing fanbase. The characters are clearly defined and there are a few twists in store. Maddie makes a compelling heroine, and Logan's affection for her is as believable as the rift that opened between them following the childhood trauma that tore them apart. The dialogue is snappy, and it's always fun to read about people who respond far more wittily than most of us ever would in real life! The romance is lightly handled and never steals focus from the driving force of the plot, which is Maddie's determination to save her one time friend so she can finally give him a piece of her mind! An engaging read, happily recommended.

Not If I Save You First was simply a very enjoyable book to read, as all Ally Carter books are . It was suspenseful, funny, and romantic all in one very well written book. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something action packed but also not too heavy.

Honestly not a surprise because I love all of her books

Oh my goodness. First off: I love Ally Carter. Secondly: This book was fantastic. I genuinely enjoyed the character, but most of all that Maddie was both a girly girl and a total force to be reckoned with. Turns out both can exist simultaneously. This book was an adventure, and even though I told myself to savor it, I still read it in one sitting. Pros: badass protagonist, great one liners, complex villain, the ability to make you see red with fury when you get to that part. Cons: Logan isn't Alexei #sorrynotsorry
