The final volume of Harwanko’s Novel Women trilogy celebrates the friendship, support, and comradery shared by six 50-ish women as they face new challenges.

The members of the Novel Women book club have become close friends; their meetings are less about discussing books and more about helping one another through life’s vicissitudes. Now, as they enter their empty-nest years, three are still married while the other three are divorced. All are dealing with upheavals in their lives. Madeline Miller and her husband Stan are facing a major lifestyle downgrade: Stan’s reputation as an accountant has been tainted by association since his partner was convicted of fraud. On the way home from a holiday celebration, the couple learns that their daughter was just arrested for driving under the influence. It is a body blow for Madeline, whose parents were both alcoholics. Meanwhile, book club founder Brianna (Bri) Lambert is in professional turmoil. After being fired from her job as an event planner by her domineering and vindictive boss Nicole Crestfield, Bri decides to open her own business; Nicole does her best to sabotage the fledgling company. Hanna Feldon is consumed with guilt over a secret she is keeping from her husband Mark—she has kissed another man (“Should she tell him now?”). Staci Hughes, Charlotte Egan, and Ava Aguiar are all divorced and have begun relationships with new men, but they are hitting emotional stumbling blocks. The amiable story is narrated in conversational prose by each of the six protagonists as they navigate their individual hurdles while “starting over.” This engaging narrative device keeps the momentum steady by alternating speakers with every new chapter—each voice reflects a unique personality with individual weaknesses and strengths. Despite a bit of excessive melodrama, the novel as a whole is a testament to the strength of female resilience and friendships. The abundant angst that runs through the storyline is relieved by occasional humor, especially during the unanticipated vaudeville-style antics of a flock of determined geese that threatens the success of Bri’s elaborate first major event. Readers will cheer the series’ satisfying conclusion.
