Description: This is the sixth edition of a handy reference on nurses' roles and responsibilities and interventions for diagnostic testing. It includes standards and precautions for specimen collection and transport as well as an overview of laboratory tests, including indications and results.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a simple-to-use, comprehensive guide to diagnostic testing and the needs of the patient. The book enables nurses and clinicians to understand the purpose of tests, clinical implications, and nursing interventions needed to care for the patient. It would be impossible to remember all of this information, and this book allows nurses to practice the highest standards of patient care.
Audience: The audience includes students, nurses, and clinicians.
Features: The book is organized into three sections, the first of which provides an overview of nurses' role in diagnostic testing. It details the factors that may interfere with the results and it describes the three phases of testing, identifying the nursing process, variables, and care elements. Section two addresses practice standards. The clinical alerts are nicely identified and quickly draw readers' attention. Again, care is described based on the three phases and organized by type of collection, including evidentiary. Section three provides a list of laboratory tests alphabetically. For each test, there is a short description of the test with the procedure, along with indications, values clinical implications, interfering factors, and nursing interventions. The reference lists demonstrate that the tests are evidence-based. To make the book easier to use, I would recommend using page tabs to distinguish the sections. Overall, the book reminds me of a similar book I used when I was a student to prepare for clinical.
Assessment: This is a valuable clinical tool that provides easy access to common laboratory and diagnostic tests. It is an easy-to-carry guide for nurses and clinicians to quickly familiarize themselves with procedures, reference values, etc. It is a great resource for students and beginning practitioners. This edition addresses the most up-to-date tests.
