Description: This book is in its 12th edition, focusing on the various aspects of nursing and health care in the United States. It offers case studies, journal articles, and NCLEX questions to enhance learning. The book also provides an access code to the website "the Point" for additional information for students, but I was unable to review it.
Purpose: According to the authors, the book focuses on the latest information related to the delivery of care, structure of the healthcare milieu, nursing roles, impact of technology, and the changing financial picture in health care. The objectives are well written and the book is excellent because it discusses all aspects of nursing, including the healthcare environment and all the ramifications related to safety, legal, and finance. The material is presented clearly and concisely utilizing charts, cartoons, and small paragraphs to enhance the topics within each chapter. It is very easy to read and understand. The book's objectives are met and the key concepts and NCLEX-style questions at the end of each chapter will benefit readers and enhance learning for novices.
Audience: The authors have dedicated this book to nursing students, who are "the heroes of the future." The book is an excellent resource for nursing students and others who want more information regarding the historical trends related to health care and nursing history. The material is presented clearly and questions are offered to provoke critical thinking by utilizing case studies, cartoons, and practical questions. There are also resources and teaching tools available for instructors. The authors are associate professors at Weber State University with 26 nurse reviewers from various universities around the country with educational credentials to validate their findings.
Features: The title of the book, Nursing in Today's World: Trends, Issues and Management, appropriately captures all elements within the book and each topic is thoroughly discussed with key concepts. The book reflects on the history and growth of both nursing and health care through time. As an experienced nurse, I found the chapters easy to read and the topics interesting and thought-provoking. The book covers many aspects of health care that include ethical and financial considerations, managing conflict, and influence of the political process. The cartoons in the book are colorful and thought-provoking. Questions are available at the end of each chapter with references for additional reading. Additionally, according to the authors, the accompanying website is a flexible learning solution that provides enhanced additional resources for students.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for novice and experienced nurses. The chapters provoke thought and critical thinking and discuss current issues in health care. I learned about issues related to the history of nursing that I did not know about, and found to be very interesting. The cartoons are pertinent to the chapters and add levity to the reading material. This 12th edition is justified as it covers topics related to current nursing issues and other aspects of health care and management.
