Overview

Since the U.S. Department of Agriculture put into place the long-awaited National Organic Program, American consumers have finally had a set of nationwide standards for organic foods. But new standards raise new questions. What is organic food? What's the relationship between organic food and food labeled with terms like all-natural, free-range, hormone-free,and locally grown? Are organic, made with organic, and 100% organic foods different? And most importantly, is organic food better for me and my family? This handy guide provides a thorough but nontechnical introduction to organic food. Some topics of special interest include product labeling, health and nutrition, environmental quality, and pricing.

About the Author

Steve Meyerowitz was nicknamed "Sproutman" in the 1970s because his New York City apartment was always packed with gardens of home-grown, organic baby vegetables. They were part of his lifetime fight against chronic allergies and asthma. After twenty years of disappointment with conventional medicine techniques, he became symptom-free through his personally designed program of diet, raw juices, and fasting. In 1980 he founded The Sprout House, a "no-cooking" school in New York City teaching the benefits of a "living foods," vegetarian diet.
Steve is a health crusader and author of ten books including Power Juices Super Drinks, Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine, Juice Fasting and Detoxification, and Food Combining and Digestion. He has been featured on PBS, the Home Shopping Network, QVC, TV Food Network, and in Better Nutrition, Prevention, Organic Gardening and House & Garden magazines. His "home-sprouters," the Freshlife Automatic Sprouter and the Hemp Sprout Bag, used for indoor organic gardening, are sold worldwide. You can learn more about his books and gardening inventions at www.Sproutman.com.
