Description: This is the fifth edition of a review of the scientific basic of orthopedic surgery. Tables and figures combined with the efficient text make this a wonderful concise review source. Each chapter is followed by a thorough series of references that provide added depth if readers so chooses.
Purpose: Published in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the book is intended to provide a foundation for informed clinical decision-making by presenting the basic science in a clinically relevant context. The book is presented in both print and online formats. I love the efficiency of the print copy for a focused review of basic science in preparation for boards and in training, and the online version for access to foundational materials whenever and wherever I have access to a computer.
Audience: The target audience is obviously orthopedic surgeons in practice and in training, particularly those who are preparing for in training and orthopedic board exams, but also clinical practitioners who want a sound basic science basis for what they do. AAOS with author Roy Aaron have brought together an impressive group of contributors who cover the gamut of basic science.
Features: The 47 chapters are grouped into five sections. Each chapter stands alone as a review of its targeted topic and, as a sequential collection, the chapters cover the broad range of orthopedic basic science. The figures and tables are well designed for an efficient catchup and review of important concepts. For the challenging subject of orthopedic basic science, the authors have done a great job of creating an efficient review that makes each topic easier to understand.
Assessment: This is a great review covering a difficult but essential topic. It is an essential part of every academic library used by orthopedic residents and fellows preparing for their standardized examinations. It is also a nice addition to the personal library of clinicians who want to retain their foundational knowledge of basic science as they continue their careers in orthopedics.
