Description: This handbook, a pocket resource for otolaryngologists in training, includes information on a broad range of pathology, organized by disease process and procedure. It is the only pocket book I am aware of that describes operative techniques in a bullet-point fashion for the majority of procedures mastered by otolaryngologists.
Purpose: The author states that this book "will provide the ENT trainee with virtually all the information they will need to progress from their introduction to ENT practice." While the book does contain valuable information in an easily accessible format, the information is significantly condensed. Therefore, some basic knowledge of the disease process or procedure techniques is needed to get the full benefit of this book.
Audience: This is ideal for use as a quick reference while on call or in the hospital for midlevel to upper-level residents in training, or as a refresher for practicing otolaryngologists in the office.
Features: The book covers a broad range of otolaryngology topics from facial plastics to head and neck cancer to otology. The short chapters are organized by pathology or procedure. The book also includes a useful glossary, as well as a table of "ENT Numbers" that lists the associated incidence, percentages, etc., of various pathologies. The book is easy to use overall, although the small print can put a strain on the eyes if read for long periods of time.
Assessment: This is useful as a quick reference for otolaryngologists in training, especially as a memory refresher before a surgical case. This is the most portable reference of surgical techniques I have come across.
