NEW YORK CITY, USA
Roy Lichtenstein
(1923–1997)
In 1966, photographer Jay Maisel purchased a rundown, six-storey building, the former Germania Bank, at 190 Bowery, New York, and made it his home. Roy Lichtenstein, by that time a leading figure of the pop art movement, rented a room on the fourth floor where he set up a studio and residence. In the 1960s, this gritty part of Lower Manhattan was a hive of creativity, and Lichtenstein’s neighbours included painters like Robert Indiana, Malcolm Morley, Adolph Gottlieb, Jasper Johns and Mark Rothko, as well as sculptor Louise Nevelson, all lured by the cheap rent in the area.
Lichtenstein’s studio was well lit with two walls of large windows. He constructed a floor-to-ceiling wall easel system that tilted the canvases slightly forward at the top so that any excess paint dripped onto the floor rather than onto the surface of his paintings.
Best known for his pop art paintings, Lichtenstein also produced a significant body of sculpture, many of them large-scale pieces that were in sharp contrast to the flatness of his paintings. Lord Snowdon photographed him in his studio in 1969 surrounded by several works, including his geometric abstract-style depictions of the Great Pyramids.
