About the Author

Stephen W. Barthold, DVM, MS, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, Hon. Member ACLAM, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Veterinary and Medical Pathology at the University of California, Davis, and former Director of the UC Davis Center for Comparative Medicine. He has over 40 years of experience in laboratory animal pathology.

Stephen M. Griffey, DVM, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Laboratory Animal Pathology and Director of the Comparative Pathology Laboratory at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He has over 20 years of experience in laboratory animal pathology.

Dean H. Percy, DVM, MSc, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Pathobiology Department, Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph, Ontario. He has over 50 years of experience in veterinary pathology and laboratory animal pathology.

Description: This is a general primer on diseases of laboratory rodents and rabbits and the pathology associated with these diseases. It is not meant to be a definitive guide to the strain specific pathology observed in the myriad types of mice used in the laboratory. It includes numerous color photographs and photomicrographs of lesions.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe general patterns of disease and the most important diseases in laboratory rodents and rabbits and provide references where more in-depth information can be found. These are worthy objectives because there are many groups that that do not focus solely on laboratory animals and need a general primer, such as the veterinary pathology or laboratory animal medicine trainee, as well as pathologists who occasionally see a rodent cross their microscope.
Audience: The audience is veterinary students, veterinary residents, and veterinarians, particularly in the fields of anatomic pathology and laboratory animal medicine.
Features: The organization of the book is the same as the previous edition, with chapters by species, further broken down by type of disease (viral, bacterial, neoplastic, etc.). The book remains unmatched as an essential primer for laboratory animal pathology, and it is written by some of the most respected authorities in the field. It is a gem, with abundant images of both gross and microscopic lesions, often of essential diseases that won't be seen in contemporary practice. The organization makes it a good primer for trainees, but can prove cumbersome for those trying to use it as a diagnostic atlas.
Assessment: The edition has a few changes, such as the inclusion of numerous references after every section for further reading. Therefore, veterinary pathologists and laboratory animal medicine specialists can use this as an entry point to dig deeper into references that will have more depth for their tasks. Another major change in this edition is the use of color photographs and photomicrographs exclusively, although most images are the same as their black-and-white counterparts in the previous edition. The content of the chapters has not changed dramatically, although, as the authors note, the rabbit chapter in particular has been updated. Overall, this book remains an essential for the library of the anatomic veterinary pathologist and is of use to other veterinarians. The new edition adds some appealing features and updates.
