PreS-K-Colorful illustrations of endearing animal characters; a repetitive, rhyming text; and a happy ending mark this book as a story-time crowd-pleaser. Patito feo ("Ugly Duckling") needs to find out who he is, so he goes off in search of his mother. Along the way he encounters a frog, a rabbit, a squirrel, and a hedgehog. He is relieved to find that none of them is his mother. As each animal joins him in his search, the quest takes on the air of a festive parade. When he finally comes across a swan, he knows instantly that he has found his very own mother. The happy friends break into song: "T# eres t# y yo soy yo, todos somos diferentes. T# debes saber qui n eres como el patito valiente." ("You are you and I am Me, we are all different. You need to know who you are, like the brave little cygnet.") The positive transformation in this version of the well-known tale has been from a confused little duck to a brave one. Two pages of helpful tips for teachers and caregivers are included at the end of the book. This title would work well in conjunction with P.D. Eastman's (Eres tu mi mam ?
