This book is a pleasure to work through. It is written in a very precise, but user-friendly style without dumbing down the material It starts off simply, and then gradually takes you into the field using lots of diagrams and worked examples to ease the transition. Not a cheap purchase, but worth every penny. Don't get bogged down in heavier tomes - go for this one. It's the real deal!

This is the best introduction I have found to the rather challenging field of pattern recognition. It is very well written and beautifully illustrated. It uses familiar ideas from statistics and linear algebra to cleverly construct a multi-layered view of classification and pattern recognition. The author is a renowned teacher, who knows the learning process well and eases the reader through new concepts deftly. I recommend it both for self study and as a classroom text.
