Audience: The authors intend the book primarily for those who wish to become pediatric anesthesiologists or are seeking extra preparation for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) oral examination. As there is no subspecialty examination in pediatric anesthesiology, preparation for the ABA is the only goal.
Features: Both common and rare clinical scenarios in pediatric anesthesia are covered. Prior to each case are a number of multiple choice questions that are outstanding overall. However, the K-type questions, which have been eliminated by the ABA, persist. The cases are logically sorted by organ system of the principal problem. The problems are presented in the order that anesthesiologists would encounter clinically. Clear and concise explanations follow each section, enhancing readability. More illustrations and algorithms would have improved several sections.
Assessment: This book can be an asset for those preparing to embark on a career in pediatric anesthesia. Organization of thought is stressed. Many find it difficult to prepare for the oral ABA examinations, but this book completely covers any questions likely to be queried. I suspect that this book's coverage of topics might be deemed somewhat superficial if there were pediatric anesthesia boards. Nonetheless, it is the only book with this goal.
