About the Author

Barton D. Schmitt, MD, FAAP, is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and medical director of the After-Hours Call Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, CO.  Dr Schmitt is also the author of My Child Is Sick!, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).  Dr Schmitt has received several awards, including the C. Anderson Aldrich Award for contributions in child development and the Education Award for contributions in pediatric education, both from the AAP.

Description: This is the 14th edition of a book of widely used triage protocols for children's health conditions and injuries. The protocols are appropriate for use in telephone call centers and health providers' offices. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nursing and healthcare staff with triage protocols for use with parents who are calling with questions about their children's healthcare issues. These protocols are much needed as guidelines for healthcare staff responding to parents questions, particularly when pediatric healthcare centers are closed for the day.
Audience: The book is written for use by nurses and other healthcare professionals in giving advice to parents and caregivers on children's health issues. The author is the premier authority on pediatric telephone protocols.
Features: The alphabetized protocols cover children's health conditions, illnesses, symptoms, and injuries. They consist of the most pertinent questions regarding the condition or injury and then advice if the parent or caregiver can provide home care for the child, or, alternatively, should have the child seen in the emergency department, urgent care setting, or pediatric office. The unique feature of the book is the easy-to-use, step-by-step format of the protocols. Also helpful are the dosage tables for commonly used over-the-counter pediatric medications. The shortcoming of the book, of course, is that every obscure condition or symptom cannot be included.
Assessment: This book has been used by countless nurses and has provided advice for thousands of parents about their children's health conditions, particularly when pediatric offices are closed. To my knowledge, it is a one-of-a-kind book. This update is absolutely needed as evidence regarding healthcare of children is constantly improving and changing.
