Description: This is a pocket-sized, waterproof guide focused on pediatric conditions, growth and development, medications, and procedures designed for use in clinical practice settings. This edition updates clinical practices that have evolved since the 2015 first edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a useful resource for nursing students and nurses who may not have ready access to book or online material in the clinical setting. The contents are organized by color-coded tabs and information is presented in a bulleted format.
Audience: This guide is designed primarily for entry-level nursing students (ADN, BSN programs). Nurses in pediatric settings where online and material resources are limited also may find it useful. It presents basic information, so it should not be considered a comprehensive resource. The author is a credible authority on pediatric nursing.
Features: The guide presents basic and introductory information about the care of children and adolescents. Caring for children requires specialized skills, and the book highlights tips for pediatric clinical skills. It lacks references linked to the content, although it has a general list of references at the end of the book. Some content areas lack the latest scientific evidence (e.g., blood pressure should be based on NHLBI standards rather than ranges). Tips for clinical skills, infectious disease incubation periods, and assessments are easy to read and access with the color-coded tabs.
Assessment: There are many evidence-based, succinct guidelines available on pediatric nursing care. A book of this type definitely needs to present the same level of evidence as others currently on the market.
