Perforated Edges
Perforated edges all lined up on a page only caused me to focus more on them and tear the paper out imperfectly. These poems are about my imperfections; darkness and despair, but also the light and hope that can coexist among it. Light cannot exist without the darkness. I have learned this year while writing these poems, that my darkness is as much a part of me as the light. I write to embrace it and release it. The pain erupts into words on the page as it processes and finds its way to the light. I'm like a photographer who works in a dark room, knowing there is beauty there, but needing the dark to help it develop. My hope is that my poetry will find you where you are. Maybe you see yourself there in the darkness and read these words and will know in your soul that you are not the only one who experiences feelings so profound. You are not alone. Maybe you see yourself on the other side of despair, in the light of hope. May these words spur you on as you continue your journey.

About the Author

Emily J Kinzy is from the metro Detroit area of Michigan. Her poetry is inspired by her lived-experience with depression and anxiety. Writing has been a catalyst for healing in the darkness of depression. She writes to process profound despair and great hope; both she holds as darkness and light. Emily has a daughter who is the light of her life. She enjoys volunteering at her daughter’s elementary school and is an advocate who is passionate about social justice and human rights. Aside from writing, Emily loves music and hiking in the woods.

Brian Schrier's (editor) love for poetry and the arts rekindled when he retired from the Macomb County Sheriff's Office after 25 years of service. In 2020, he joined up with the Lake St. Clair Creative Writers Group to sharpen his skill. He writes in free verse with interesting line breaks and unconventional patterns. He has four poetry books available on Amazon (Someone Should Knock Him Around a Little and Other Poems, Four Brothers Tried Hard, If I Hold Your Hand and Other Poems, and Fourth Grade Recess and Other Poems). He lives in Michigan with the most agreeable roommate ever - his tabby Sadie. When he isn't writing or meeting her needs, he enjoys church, swimming, cooking, reading, and volunteering.
