Description: This edition of a pharmacology book for nurses comes with access to a website with an ebook version that also offers resources for students and educators not available in the print version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a straightforward and student-friendly pharmacology textbook appropriate for a variety of levels of nursing programs.
Audience: Nursing students at all levels (ADN, diploma, BSN, RN-BSN) are an appropriate audience for this book. It is written at lower level of difficulty than Pharmacology and the Nursing Process, 7th edition, Lilley et al. (Elsevier 2014) and Lehne's Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 9th edition, Burchum and Rosenthal (Elsevier, 2016). I would recommend this book primarily for an AD program or diploma program.
Features: This book takes a drug classification approach to learning pharmacology, which is its greatest strength. A systems approach or disease approach can oftentimes confuse students. The book is divided into units and each unit has objectives. These objectives are excellent for each of the units and chapters. Chapters not included in other pharmacology books cover herbal therapies, drugs of abuse, the role of the nurse in research, and labor and delivery medications. Often, these topics are covered in classes other than pharmacology classes. Each chapter has sections on the nursing process and patient-centered collaborative care, which enhance the chapters and include patient teaching. Chapters end with NCLEX study questions.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for use in an AD or diploma program. The level of difficulty largely depends on whether the book includes pathophysiology and anatomy, and this one focuses instead on the nursing process and patient teaching. The website is excellent and offers additional learning activities for students. This update is necessary, as is the case with all pharmacology books.
