This book provides an introduction to the basis for therapeutic intervention, as well as guidelines for monitoring interventions for toxic side effects. It provides useful information on current drug therapies using tables liberally to explain and clarify that information. The editors indicate that the purpose is to provide a text for primary care providers on correct drug therapy and necessary monitoring for pharmacologic intervention. This is a needed text that readily meets this objective. It is aimed at the primary care practitioner and the graduate student training for this role. It is written by credible contributors and editors. Formatting includes information on history, exam, diagnosis, intervention, and assessment for toxic effects. There is an excellent chapter on the alternative method of herbal medicine for a variety of disease entities. In addition, the very large appendix provides specific dosing information on drugs currently prescribed. Perhaps the one shortcoming of this book is it will become rapidly outdated because of the continual introduction of next generation drugs. This is a high quality pharmacotherapeutic text for primary care practitioners, nurses, or doctors. The formatting style makes the book an excellent reference, and allows scientific information to be found rapidly. The additional information provides a more rounded approach to therapeutic interventions, and exceeds information provided in the text Pharmacology (Appleton & Lange).
