Description: This book on pharmacy law and practice describes the law rather than just listing the acts and cases that make up the law applying to community pharmacy. Many chapters further describe the law in great detail for various, even obscure, areas of community pharmacy. Since new laws are always being implemented, each edition has been a complete rewrite. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to concentrate on the laws that apply to community pharmacy as well as other areas which the authors consider relevant for community pharmacists. The book does meet these worthy objectives, but it contains so much information that it may actually be confusing to community pharmacists.
Audience: The book is intended specifically for community pharmacists, but it is probably only useful for highly ambitious community pharmacists or lawyers representing pharmacists.
Features: It begins with a basic history of law through the National Health Service in the U.K. and then branches off into other areas, including rural dispensing. Each chapter covers an aspect of law thoroughly, but this does not make up for the abundant shortcomings of this book. In its depth, it is really only useful as a reference for obscure information related to pharmacy law. The book covers European and international law and targets American and international pharmacists. However, the law overall can be a confusing topic, and U.S. laws vary state to state. Adding the international aspect makes the book even more difficult to use. Perhaps the title should clearly indicate that this book covers international practice. The prose is uninspired and readers are likely to lose interest almost immediately.
Assessment: In comparison to other books on pharmacy law, this one excels in quantity, not quality. In taking on both American and international law, which vary greatly, and attempting to tie them together, the book ends up being confusing and misleading. I cannot recommend it.
