3.5 Stars, rounded Sadie is one of the ‘newbies’ in the Pacific Pier building, working at the spa and in the tattoo shop. Caleb – a part-time partner of Spencer who owns the whole shebang is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. But, being who she is, and more than a little closed-off and hedgehog-prickly, Sadie calls him Suits, in a not so endearing way. But one night with the rain pouring down she spots Caleb tucked in a corner, waiting patiently, looking into the shrubs. Soaking wet, speaking softly and ‘shushing’ her when she calls out to ask what he’s doing, she can hardly believe it when he coaxes out a 3 legged dog, obviously starving and maltreated, but determined to make Caleb her human. Much as Caleb gently coaxed Lollipop into his arms, he works the same magic with Sadie. He’s intrigued by her smart mouth and the shadows she sees in her eyes, but he’s also got a ton of ‘issues’ he doesn’t want to share so he does expect that when she’s ready she’ll do just that. But, he’s so perfectly patient and I’m wondering how he’s not utterly bruised – because despite her claiming to be far more mature than the angry 15 year old she once was – Sadie has a TON of growing up to do, and her ability to run first and think through things later is more than frustrating. In fact, she was running for 90% of the book – funny how it took EVERYONE else in her little group (her boss at the tattoo parlor, her friend Iris with the taco truck, and even her co-pet-parented 3 legged dog Lollipop had more sense when Caleb tripped over his own two feet, or didn’t bare his soul at the first moment. Hey -neither one of them was truly irretrievably broken, and Caleb has done more with his life than navel gaze and act petulant every time family called, but it felt like he was on an endless treadmill of tests – and it would have to take something truly special to make him take all that time. I loved him, debated on slapping her more than once, and wanted to have a dog that needs to hold hands when she goes for a car ride. I thought that perhaps this would be the book that made me think I can’t read another in this series, but nope – there was just enough alpha from Caleb (particularly with Sadie’s parents) to keep me interested in his character and heart, and when Sadie finally got it – after a serious talking to from both Iris and some rando customer mentioning his wife’s romance novel learning – they have a difficult, and not always smooth path on the way to happily ever after. I only hope that Sadie grows up enough to realize what a gem Caleb is – and I can’t help but think his sisters (also known as The Coven) will have more than a fair share of influence on that. I love this series – and while this wasn’t a favorite book in the series – there always has to be one – right? Oh – and did I mention that Caleb always thought he was allergic - like epi-pen level allergic to dogs? Yep – quite a start to a co-pet-parenting moment there. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This book is #7, in the Heartbreaker Bay series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader understanding, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this great series in order. Caleb has a lot going for him. Successful, charming, keeps his promises, etc. So when he co-owns a loving animal with someone who has a hard time trusting him, he is shocked. Sadie has been involved in a sort of hate-you thing with him and now he is trying to bring it to an end. He needs her to understand him on a new level. Sadie cannot believe it when she realizes that Caleb has been honest with her. He means what he says too? How can a girl hold off from starting the feels? She and Lollipop will just have to work at it. Right? Well ok, she will just work at it. This was such a fun and sexy book! Right from the very beginning I was laughing and devouring each page as fast as I could. Always a fan of this series, this new title was a great installment. Very much worth the read. I highly recommend it!! ***This ARC copy was given by Edelweiss and its publisher, in exchange for an honest review.

How can you not help but fall in love with a three legged dog, Lollipop!! So that's what Sadie and Caleb did, so they share joint custody. Very opposite of each other but will soon find they are fighting some of the past demons and can't fight the physical attraction between them. Loved Sadie, such a past and broken but is determined to do for her self. She is now so strong and wants to help others with their scars. Caleb is my new book boyfriend, he looks so put together on the outside but has his own demons he has been fighting with. He is so good to Sadie. Now his sisters, I could do without, they are such PITA's!! This is the perfect read with plenty of banter, humor and a sexy relationship. Plus I loved Lollipop!!

I really enjoyed this book by Jill Shalvis! When you read one of her books, you know that you're in for a treat with witty banter and a lot of heat - this was no different. I immediately loved the chemistry between Caleb and Sadie. I read this as a stand alone as I haven't read all of the Heartbreaker Bay books quite yet. It was still easy to enjoy all of the secondary characters that have shown up in past books. There's also a lot of mention of Kel from the Animal Magnetism series that Jill did a few years ago (one of my favorites!). I hope that means we'll be getting his story soon! I love how Jill doesn't shy away from issues that used to make people think - "I can't believe she'd put that in a book." I loved learning about Sadie's past and how she was a very complicated person, but why she was that way was also endearing. Caleb's relationship with his mentor Naoki was equally as endearing. If you like a strong female lead and an equally strong male lead with lots of sweet moments and heat - this is the book for you! ** Thank you to Tasty Book PR and Jill Shalvis for providing me with this ARC. Handsome, rich, I don’t need anyone male? Check Pretty, struggling, prickly, I can do it on my own female? Check Cutie patootie, lost, cold, shivering, three-legged dog? Check What do you have? The beginning of a wonderful book, Playing for Keeps 7th in the Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis. Caleb and Sadie…sigh…both so needy but wanting to go it alone. I loved the way their differences evolved into love and understanding. Both came from overbearing families and both took different roads to become themselves. Coming together, with the help of Lollipop, they realize they’re so much more with each other than without. Arguments, differences of opinion, and then the realization that they’re their perfect match. Loved it! I’ve been a fan of the down to earth books penned by Jill Shalvis for a long time. She is an ‘auto-buy’ author for me. Her ability to pull emotions out of every day situations is done so well, and her wit and wisdom surrounding life in general, and happily ever after endings specifically, is one of the reasons I love her books.

I am new to Jill Shalvis world and I have to say that I am loving so far. Caleb and Sadie story is very romantic and emotional. The way the cute dog brings them together is so wonderful to read. They are two hurting souls and have had their difficulties in the past and now they are paying it in adulthood. This is why Lollipop is so important to them, it is the glue that will keep them together and it is heart melting to read their story.

Jill Shalvis is one of my must-read authors. I loved this edition in the Heartbreaker Bay series. Despite being a billionaire romance, the characters are real and relatable. Caleb and Sadie seem like oil and water on the surface, but when they get to know each other, they have much in common. Playing for Keeps is emotional and humorous, with just the right amount of steam interspersed. Both Caleb and Sadie as well as all the peripheral characters are unique, interesting and kept me glued to the book till the end. Definitely a must-read!

I really enjoyed Caleb and Sadie's love story. Their co-parenting of the rescue dog was entertaining, especially on the night that they found her. Caleb was so adorable with Lollipop throughout the story. Playing for Keeps is another great Heartbreaker Bay novel. I'm glad that Old Man Eddie made an appearance. Loved his part! I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy.

Jill Shalvis just keeps writing winners! This series is so real but so fun! Caleb and Sadie are very different on the surface but as we get to know them we see how much they really have in common. The banter between Caleb and his sisters (The Coven) is quite funny. However, the genuine love between them is amazing as is the way they try to help and protect him. The patience and acceptance he shows Sadie just makes you cheer him on more! If you haven't read any of this series, go ahead and start with this one. You'll go back to read the others and be an instant Shalvis fan. I read an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Just when I didn't think I would like any hero as much as Lucas or Joe, along comes Caleb! Each hero in the Heartbreaker Bay series gets better. Sadie is an endearing character. She is tough but has a lot of reasons to be distrustful of everyone. Caleb is dreamy....loyal, smart and plain old adorable. His interactions with Lollipop are fabulous as are his relationships with his sisters. I loved their story! Jill Shalvis has a gift of writing stories that are fun that make you laugh out loud and get emotionally invested in the characters. I'm always sad the story goes by so quickly. I received an advance copy for an honest review.

Well, I'm now obsessed with Caleb and Sadie...but most of all, Lollipop. Shalvis brings us back to Heartbreaker Bay where we see Caleb, a very successful businessman set on taking care of everyone in his life, and Sadie, an artistic soul with a bit of a troubled past. When they find a stray dog in the rain one night, the relationship that has been mostly making eyes at each other from across the room becomes so much more. As they face the hurdles of co-parenting the cutest dog there ever was, they start to become more to one another and it isn't long before both chemistry and emotions get the better of them. I liked that Caleb wasn't going to let Sadie scare him away and I like that Sadie had a great group of friends that she could rely on to help her through this new relationship. There was so much heart in watching these two get together that I was all in on them. Shalvis had me completely invested. I loved seeing some of our past Heartbreaker Bay couples and this latest edition has all the heat and fun and emotion that we've come to expect from her. So great. And I'm not kidding...Lollipop might have been my favorite character and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

4.5 stars Playing for Keeps by Jill Shalvis is a beautifully written, highly entertaining and heartwarming read. It's no secret Jill Shalvis is the queen of romance, she knows how to draw her readers in with likable, relatable and complex characters that will take you on an emotional roller coaster while finding their happily ever after. Playing for Keeps is one of those reads that will keep you turning the pages late into the night, just one more chapter turned into me finishing the book in one sitting. Sadie and Caleb are great characters, I felt their pain and I understood why they hesitated opening themselves up to their feelings. Both Sadie and Caleb have suffered hurts, watching them slowly open up, trust and give each other the love and respect they both deserved touched my heart. These two are perfect for each other, they love hard and they fight just as hard, which makes making up all the more fun =) Jill Shalvis thank you for writing and sharing your beautiful, thoughtful words with us. Playing for Keeps is a wonderful addition to the Heartbreaker Bay series, each book has been a joy to read and I highly recommend them all!

I love this series, the town and that cheeky fountain. These two characters sure came with flaws and baggage, especially the heroine. Though seeing her family who can blame her. Along comes the hero, it's a struggle with her issues but watch her grow....eventually. The dog was the star! An emotional read and I loved it.

This was seriously the best story! I know it's a great read when I get butterflies in my stomach and find myself invested in the characters. This book is definitely going on my keeper shelf and will be reread. I could not get enough of Sadie and Caleb, not to mention Lollipop. I loved that both characters were like everyone else, imperfect. Everyone has an outward shell that is how they want to be perceived and others can't see what they are hiding underneath. Sadie and Caleb both kept parts of their real selves hidden in order to protect themselves. Watching these two characters stumble through unknown territory was so wonderful and so real. I swear I'd give this more than 5 stars if I could. I have loved every Jill Shalvis book I've ever read (and I've read every one) but this is in my top 3 list of favs! I mean seriously, she writes unbelievably awesome dialogue and she makes you fall in love with every character she writes. Plus, you always get an HEA!

I will read anything that Jill Shalvis writes, no exceptions. She has an easy blend of humor and sass that never fails to delight. While I am behind in the Heartbreaker Bay series (too many books and not enough time!) I picked Playing For Keeps up with ease and wondered what I was missing in the previous ones. Caleb is one of my favorite book boyfriends of all time and I definitely want more. The previous books definitely made a move up in my TBR pile. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.

Sadie and Caleb couldn't be more opposite- she's barely keeping her head above water, he wears thousand dollar suits. Although an attraction's been brewing, neither one has ever done anything about it...until one abandoned three-legged pup enters the picture and helps them on their way. There was a lot of push-pull between Caleb and Sadie, mainly coming from Sadie. She has quite a few deep-seated issues that keep her from ever really letting her guard down. It made for some tough times between the two, as Caleb wanted nothing more than to be all-in with her. Luckily Lollipop to the rescue! With the precious pooch bridging the distance between them, Sadie is "forced" to spend time with Caleb and slowly, very slowly, begins to open up. I admit to being frustrated by Sadie at times, wishing she wasn't so difficult. But once we learn everything she's been through, the walls she's put up and her standoffish behavior is more understandable. When Sadie finally let herself "be" I really enjoyed how she and Caleb were together. Caleb really is quite awesome- so kind, caring, and wanting to help with no expectations. Caleb, Sadie, and Lollipop all had their obstacles to overcome, but when you've got love, anything is possible!

Playing for Keeps is the seventh book in the Heartbreaker Bay series by the fabulous Jill Shalvis. I’m a huge fan of Jill's and having been reading her book long before I ever knew what a book blog was! She does family, friends and small town comradery like no other author around. Heroes and heroines with pasts to overcome, obstacles to tackle but long for a forever love. We have known Sadie for a while and I knew she was going to have a tough past, but I knew she was going to be amazing and strong. Caleb is sexy, smart and filthy rich. But to Sadie he's just Suits. She can't say his name. She can't like him or think about him or want him. But not saying his name doesn't stop him from getting into her heart and head. They have known each other for a year, but never really talked or spent any time together. But when they rescue a dog together and agree to share custody they are forced to see each other. Caleb always knew he wanted Sadie. She was like no other woman he's ever knows. She's special. But she's closed off and stubborn. He has never backed down from a challenge before and he's going to win her over. Sadie doesn't know how to have a healthy relationship. She's still trying to forget her past and move on, but it's difficult to forgive. She's tough and sarcastic and does things on purpose to ruin anything good in her life. Caleb sees behind the mask to the real woman and that scares her to death. But also gives her hope. Can Sadie let her guard down long enough to for Caleb to sneak in? Will Caleb fight for Sadie's heart and soul? I loved this story! I didn't expect it to be so emotional but I loved every minute of it. Caleb and Sadie are perfect for each other. He's open, friendly and has a crazy bunch of sisters he calls The Coven (LOVE THIS!) and her family is a little crazy and not exactly friendly and welcoming. But they just fit. They complete each other and I loved watching their friendship morph into steamy sexiness and then much more! Overall, I laughed, cried, got mad, and smiled a lot. Caleb is sexy with his smart brain and his unbelievable body and tattoos. Sadie is gorgeous with her piercings, colored hair and aloofness. Looking forward to more from this series!

Sadie Lane does not do love, she has been burnt too many times to go there again, so she puts off this prickly, somewhat sarcastic front to shield herself from the enemy. But then her friends bring Caleb Parker into her world, and suddenly maintaining that standoffish exterior becomes harder than ever to keep up. He has trouble written all over him, but convincing her heart and head to be on the same page about that becomes a major problem!! Every time Caleb Parker is near Sadie Lane he notices the sparks, but she doesn't seem to notice them, or him for that matter. She acts like she can't stand him, constantly pushing him away with sarcastic comments, and damn if he still doesn't want to get to know her, there is just something about her that cannot be denied. He just needs to find a way in... little does he know a scared little dog is about to give him that chance. Playing for Keeps brings you a swoony love story that is good for your heart, each page is filled with humor and feisty banter that will have you giggling out loud! I absolutely loved this character pairing, the moment they graced the pages I was enamored with them and their unique little union. They tried so hard to fight the sparks, but ultimately love won out, and they both found themselves surrendering to it, and boy was it fun to watch the battle unfold! This is definitely one of my favorites from this author, it had everything I crave in a story, and then some, Caleb really helped seal the deal for me! He was the perfect book boyfriend, sexy, sweet, considerate, and just a tad bossy!! Highly recommend you get your hands on this newest offering from Ms. Shalvis, her wonderfully crafted characters will have you beaming throughout!

For a year Caleb Parker and Sadie Lane have seen one another around. With the Pacific Pier Building a hive of business and friendships and both Caleb and Sadie often in the area it is not surprising that they would see one another over the past year when there for business or pleasure. One night their lives change when they take on the challenge of co-owning an abandoned dog. With forced exchanges of three-legged Lollipop, frequent Lollipop-updates via tex messages and eventually more personal messages between them the two begin to leave their preconceptions misconceptions behind and really get to know one another. As their backstories come out I began to know and really like Caleb and Sadie and see how they might be able to have a future together...well...maybe. Sadie did have a bit more trust and communication issues than Caleb did and her family issues were perhaps harder to surmount than Caleb’s were BUT as the story unfolded the two did finally figure out what was important to them and it just happened to be being a couple. Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

Caleb is a wealth man. Sadie is struggling with two job. Sadie has a dark past, Caleb is emotionally detached with women. Their paths have crossed for over a year. However, there was a lot of tension between them. Until one rainy night. Caleb and Sadie rescue a stray dog which they now share joint custody of. Jill Shalvis never disappoints. Her Heartbreaker Bay Series is amazing. Jill's books always make me laugh. This book has a HEA with no cliffhanger. *I reviewed this book voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind for this review.

Playing for Keeps by Jill Shalvis is a 2019 Avon Publication. I’m always happy to return to the Heartbreaker Bay series. So far, each chapter in the series has been a little whimsical and maybe a bit quirky. This book begins with a similar tone as the other books in the series, with Sadie and Caleb adopting an adorable dog named ‘Lollipop’ and becoming co- pet parents. However, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Their attraction to each other is like mixing oil and water. Caleb has dealt with some heavy issues in his past, but he’s taken big strides toward maturation, although he still hides behind emotional barriers, and his sister’s overabundance of caution and extreme protectiveness. Sadie on the other hand- Well, Sadie is still coping with a lot of baggage she can’t quite seem to shake off. In Sadie, the reader sees someone struggling not only with a haunted past, but with some bitterness, and the immature need to rebel, still trying to shock and offend. Of all the books in this series, to date, this one feels a little more serious. Shalvis always has an uncanny knack for addressing uncomfortable topics, while keeping the tone light. Her humor always offsets the heaviness in any given situation. This time, however, the whimsy, charm, humor, felt forced and often falls a bit flat. Despite that, the story is still a very compelling read. Sadie’s issues would test the patience of Job, but so would Caleb’s sisters!! I am glad, however, that Shalvis addressed a topic rarely explored in romance novels of this caliber. Although I found this couple to be more of a challenge than most, their happily ever after may have been the most rewarding, in some ways. Perceptions, expectations, family, acceptance, and forgiveness are adeptly woven into the story. Caleb and Sadie defy all the odds against them and at the end of the day, this is what makes this book stand out. In all honesty, I struggled with this one just a little bit and I can’t, in one hundred percent honesty, tell you this is my absolute favorite book of the series. It almost felt a little like the black sheep of the family, going off on a different course from the others. However, I still think the outcome was worth the extra patience this couple seemed to require. Of course I was, as always, happy to see this couple, and Lollipop, get their long overdue happily ever after.

Caleb Parker is all work and no play until he meets Mercedes Lane. Sadie has her own demons but these two put all the pieces together. So fun reading more in this series!

Review: PLAYING FOR KEEPS: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel by Jill Shalvis Publication Date: January 22, 2019 Genre: Contemporary Romance Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated 5 Stars I truly enjoyed this story. It pulled me in on page one, and never let me go. I think a lot of that is the banter and camaraderie of all the players that make me want to move there. Sadie had an interesting past, but she remained relatable and loveable. I fell hard for Caleb. He was all together on the outside, even as he dealt with shadows in his own past. They were both real, making mistakes, knee-jerk reactions to things and yet able to step back and think about it rationally. I liked that…they didn’t belabor the situation, they just moved on after talking it out. It was a sweet romance that stuck with me long after I finished the book. *Review copy provided by Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. ~*~*~*~

Seven books into the Heartbreaker Bay series and I always end each book with an ear splitting grin on my face. Playing for Keeps opens with the of the most memorable meet-cutes between a three legged dog and her two humans, Sadie Lane and Caleb Parker. This frenemies to love story, a year in the making, has all the right elements. Two kindred souls, make that three kindred souls, as they find their future as a unit. Following the adoption of Lollipop, Sadie and Caleb navigate the waters of co-parenting. Caleb, a.k.a. "Suits", appears to be Sadie’s opposite, but this is truly a case of not judging a book by it’s cover. Caleb is absolutely dreamy and I think I most enjoyed the way he broke down the walls Sadie has so painstakingly erected. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a healthy dose of lust to drive their connection, but they really do get each other. In some ways this is a slow-burn romance as they’ve spent a year dancing around each other, but once they start sharing pieces of themselves, things progress rather quickly. The Heartbreaker Bay series is among my favorites. I’ve loved every book and I’m hoping that the next book in the series is Ivy’s. I highly recommend this book and the series.

I loved this book! This is the seventh book in the Heartbreaker Bay series but it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. Fans of the series will enjoy checking in with some much-loved characters. I have enjoyed all of the books in this series so I was pretty eager to read this newest installment and it did not disappoint. Once I started reading this book, I didn't want to put it down and felt swept away by the story. Caleb and Sadie are the focus of this book along with their little dog, Lollipop. The book opens with Caleb and Sadie finding a stray dog in the rain. They both are ready to accept responsibility for the dog and end up deciding to share custody of the pup. Of course, this means that the pair will be seeing a lot of each other as they pass the dog back and forth. Caleb and Sadie are both great characters. Sadie's past was rather heartbreaking and her relationship with her family wasn't great. I think that learning about her past really gave the reader a lot of insight into her personality. She is very independent and refused to ask anyone for help. Caleb is rich and highly intelligent. He is also a very hard worker and quite generous. He is very close to his family but has spent a lot of his life being protected by them. I loved watching this pair fall in love. I think that they had great chemistry with each other and I enjoyed all of their interactions. Caleb wants to take care of Sadie when he sees that she needs things but that didn't mean that he thought she wasn't capable. I liked that they both had to give and take a bit and when they were upset they talked about it. I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This was a heartwarming romance with fantastic characters and an adorable dog. I can't wait to read more from Jill Shalvis! I received a digital review copy of this book from Tasty Book PR via Book Funnel.
