Description: This housestaff handbook, now in its sixth edition, is a very convenient pocket-sized, ring-bound book containing almost all of the basic physiology housestaff members need to have at their fingertips.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide a concise initial approach to and management of common inpatient medical problems. Compared to all the housestaff manuals in publication, this is much more practical than most.
Audience: This is a tremendously valuable asset for every housestaff member.
Features: The sections are organized by organ systems, and each of the chapters covers specific topics such as dyspnea, hemoptysis, approach to rheumatoid disease, headache, specific cancers, hepatitis, etc. This edition has updated information on the direct-acting antivirals for hepatitis C. The photo insert pictures are well presented. There are numerous, intuitive, and very helpful tables, algorithms, and figures.
Assessment: Among a gaggle of housestaff-oriented publications, this is one of the top of the line. Its size and plastic cover make it utilitarian and durable, suitable for daily use without getting destroyed. I highly recommend this to medical students and residents just beginning their careers.
