Description: This book, more of a small loose leaf notebook with removable pages, concisely describes the most common diagnoses encountered in all subspecialties of orthopedic surgery.
Purpose: According to the authors, "The goal is not to provide an overarching comprehensive resource to cover all of orthopedic pathology, but rather to provide a concise point of reference to review the important aspects of common orthopedic pathologies for the orthopedist in training or recently out of training."
Audience: This book "is written with the orthopaedic surgery resident, intern, subintern, junior attending, (and) medical student in mind," according to the authors. An appropriate audience includes anyone who would benefit from a concise reference for a wide variety of commonly seen orthopedic diagnoses. It would be especially valuable to those with less experience, including medical students and residents. The authors include medical students, residents, and attendings in academic and private practice.
Features: The book is organized based on subspecialty area and diagnosis. In general, most chapters include information on history, physical exam, imaging, differential diagnosis, operative and nonoperative treatment, surgical technique, and postoperative care. Illustrations and tables are rare. Unfortunately, there are errors of grammar and spelling as well as errors of fact. The book is small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket. The loose leaf pages can be readily removed and replaced, but the pages themselves are very thin and easily damaged.
Assessment: Although the goal of this book is a worthy one, there are others that accomplish it better. However, few, if any, are as portable as this one.
