Podcast Audio: Make Your Show Sound As Good As Your Content

Most podcasters are expert in lots of things other than audio. Creative warriors like yourself are on the front line churning out stories and other great content week after week, helping to build what's become a serious industry.

But podcasts are about audio, after all, and not understanding the basics has its consequences. Too many shows are difficult to listen to and understand what's going on. Others simply need a bit of polishing so they can hang with the big-time productions from NPR and the like. With just a little guidance and practice, you can learn how to properly record with a mic, make it sound good, and produce a final show file that will help your show sound better and more professional.

We'll take a look at microphones, understanding room acoustics, recording setup and equipment, editing and mixing, common problems, and producing a master show file. Audio examples are available on the website so you can hear what we're talking about. Most of this isn't that hard once you're aware of the issues, so let's move the needle forward.

About the Author

I'm a professor of audio engineering and director of the Audio & Music Production degree program at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. As a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (Grammys), Audio Engineering Society, and the Themed Entertainment Association, I've had many years in the industry as a recording engineer, consultant, conference panelist, workshop presenter, and performer. As Director of Worship Arts for my church, I've spent years in church audio, designing and installing systems, consulting, and training sound teams. My doctorate is in learning & instructional design, which I use to help teachers design better experiences for students.

For fun I teach theme park design concepts in the college’s Experience Design program, applying a life-long interest in Disney Imagineering and theme parks. Even more fun, I am the designer and producer of the Themed Attraction Podcast, a show focused on theme park design. My two former Disney colleagues interview designers and other professionals who’ve worked on parks you’ve enjoyed over the years.

My degrees are in Instructional Design from The Pennsylvania State University, Music Technology & Interactive Media from New York University, and Music with Recording Arts from the University of North Carolina Asheville.
