Mr. Johnson has artfully constructed a method for optimizing problems that have no solutions. For instance, if a company is struggling with who should make decisions for the company, the CEO or the employees? There's no end point to that argument--one could argue it either way: if the CEO makes decisions, the process is quick, definitive, and everyone knows who is responsible. But, if the employees never get a say, they become devalued and their morale suffers. So it is not a problem to be solved. It is a polarity to be managed. Polarity management maps out the situation, and shows the up side of both polarities--it maximizes the good aspects of both and minimizes the down side of each. Then a company can decide that in some situations the CEO will have decision making authority (as when a decision has to be made immediately on a given issue). And, in other situations, it is best to let the employees decide (as when a dress code policy is to be written). Polarity management teaches a respect for the "other" point of view, which leads to better success in problem solving. These skills can be used in the workplace most obviously, but even in personal relationships and in general life skills.
