Description: This has been a mainstay in nursing policy for 30 years, and this edition describes the policy process in 92 easy-to-read chapters that often use a very practical approach. The previous edition was published 2013.
Purpose: The purpose is to set out the policy basics that shape U.S. healthcare, putting nursing's role at the forefront. The need for policy reform and strategies to move this agenda forward is presented in an easy-to-understand fashion. Illustrating the need for and examples of evidence-based policy is a strength of this edition.
Audience: The audience spans all of nursing, from students, both undergraduate and graduate, to nurses who are thinking of running for political office, practicing nurses delivering care or administrators in delivery systems, professional organizational leaders who wish to embrace policy changes, and community leaders who want to lead advocacy movements.
Features: The book moves from policy basics, including the policy process, to healthcare financing, political action-lobbying, nurses in Congress, special interest groups, the role of professional organizations, how policy translates to care delivery in terms of quality and safety, and nursing's role in healthcare reform through policy initiatives. This edition has a special emphasis on the Affordable Care Act and the implications for nurses, which includes nurses in the boardroom. Assessment: There are many books on policy and politics for nurses, but this one remains a classic, basic book. This edition is fresh and reflects the movement in nursing to get more nurses at policy tables. It reflects the Future of Nursing Report and upstreaming factors of health. The taking action vignettes illustrate even to the novice how easy and important it is to work for political change. This book truly reflects today's healthcare environment and demonstrates the need for strong policy leadership from nurses, a task few, if any, other books do as well.
